ON the papal flight from Cuba to Washington DC, where the Pope held his customary press conference with journalists, there were tough questions.
What was the Holy Father’s response to questions about him being a ‘Leftie’, even a ‘communist Pope’? The Pope did not seem surprised by these questions.
After all, he is a Pope who engages with the situation in which real people find themselves involved and Cuba is a ‘remnant communist state’.
However, correctly, he denied that any of his teachings were outside those of the Social Teaching of the church.
“I’m sure that I haven’t said anything more than what’s written in the social doctrine of the Church”, he responded.
Of course, the Pope is right, and the social teaching of the Catholic church has rightly be described as the Church’s ‘best kept secret’.
