Refugees And Palm Sunday

I AM proud of the way that the parish has united around the need to do justice and offer hospitality and Christian respect to refugees in Australia, especially those trapped on Manus Island and Nauru.

I know both places well and it is unworthy of us as Australians to pretend that human dignity and rights are being safeguarded by prolonged detention in these places.

DURING the week I received a letter from Kate Kennedy which commenced: “The Catholic Church in Australia has a proud history of welcoming and helping settle our refugees. I am writing to ask that you encourage your parishioners to honor that tradition and join the Palm Sunday Walk for Justice for Refugees.”

Kate is part of the Justice for Refugees Palm Sunday walk on April 09. Gather at St Patrick’s Cathedral, East Melbourne at 1pm, for Prayer, then depart the Cathedral to join the Walk for Justice Rally at the State Library in Swanston Street by 2pm.

I would like to think that we endorse and support this initiative. Australia MUST act on the current situation.
